About
I started taking photos as a young teenager, using a Kodak Brownie and using a bathroom as a darkroom to make contact prints. The two things happen- I discovered wilderness backpacking, and I’m dad loaned me his Argus rangefinder and lightmeter. Slide photography with Kodachrome and Ektachrome in remote roadless areas completely hooked me. I bought one of the early Pentax Spotmatics and three fixed focus lenses, which was a revolution for me- the gear was among the lightest for it’s time, and through-the-lens metering meant a better ratio of keepers. I moved to digital when Pentax brought out their first digital SLR. It’s wonderful having a digital darkroom.
I wrote and had published a few magazine articles, using my photos, but the major change came when I was asked to co-author “Hiking Arizona”, published by Falcon Guides and now in it’s 7th edition. Since then I’ve written more thirty outdoor and how-to guides for five different publishers. My photography is a key part of every book, but I also enjoy shooting with no commercial aim in mind.
My current gear includes an OM-Systems mirrorless camera and lenses, and a DJI drone. These tools are incredible, allowing me to get shots I could only dream of before. I’m just beginning to tap into their potential.
